Oilfield Pump Routine Maintenance: Key Measures To Ensure Stable Operation And Extend Service Life

As core equipment in oil and gas extraction and transportation systems, the operational reliability of oilfield pumps directly affects production efficiency and safety levels. Routine maintenance, through systematic inspection, cleaning, lubrication, monitoring, and preventative maintenance, can effectively delay equipment deterioration, reduce sudden failures, and ensure the continuous and stable operation of pump units under complex conditions.

The first step in routine maintenance is an inspection of the appearance and foundation condition. The pump body, base, and connecting flanges should be inspected daily to confirm the absence of obvious deformation, cracks, or leaks; the tightness of anchor bolts and coupling covers should be checked to prevent secondary damage caused by vibration loosening. For pump units installed in open-air or high-humidity environments, attention should be paid to signs of surface rust, and rust removal and repainting should be carried out promptly to maintain structural integrity.

Lubrication management is a key aspect of maintenance. Friction parts such as power-end bearings, gearboxes, and hydraulic-end plunger pairs must be lubricated or replaced with the specified grade of lubricating oil (grease) according to regulations, and changes in oil level, quality, and temperature should be monitored. Low oil levels can lead to poor lubrication and increased wear; deteriorated oil or the presence of impurities can clog oil passages and impair heat dissipation. Pump units operating in constant temperature environments should be sampled and tested regularly. In cold regions, precautions should be taken to prevent the oil's viscosity from increasing at low temperatures, which could affect lubrication.

Monitoring operating parameters should be incorporated into routine maintenance. Using pressure gauges, flow meters, thermometers, and vibration sensors, pump pressure, flow rate, temperature, and vibration trends should be tracked in real time. Any abnormal pressure fluctuations, flow rate decreases, or excessively rapid temperature rises should be promptly analyzed to identify the cause and implement adjustment or shutdown troubleshooting measures to prevent minor issues from escalating into equipment failures.

Inspection of seals and vulnerable parts is equally important. Packing, mechanical seals, and valve assembly components should be regularly checked for leaks. Excessive dripping or decreased elasticity requires immediate replacement. The suction filter must be cleaned of adhering debris to ensure unobstructed fluid flow and prevent cavitation and abrasive damage.

Cleaning should be maintained throughout the entire maintenance process. The pump casing and base area should be kept clean to prevent dust, oil, or media residue from accelerating corrosion or affecting heat dissipation. For pump sets conveying sand-containing or corrosive media, the flow channels should be flushed promptly after shutdown to reduce solid phase deposition and internal wall corrosion.

Furthermore, maintenance records and periodic maintenance plans should be established, archiving inspection results, lubrication replacements, and parts replacements. Preventive maintenance should be conducted based on operating hours or operating intensity to ensure that each pump operates in optimal condition.

Scientific daily maintenance not only reduces unplanned downtime and maintenance costs but also significantly extends the service life of oilfield pumps, providing a solid guarantee for efficient and safe production in oil and gas fields.
